Profile Thomas Buechler

I started travelling in Europe with the popular Interrail ticket that was valid for most of the Western European countries.
That was more than 30 years ago.And what looked like a normal student experience, turned out to be just the beginning of an incredible lifespan tasting of different countries, cultures, people and cuisines. But it all started with Europe.
1980 I moved my "headquarters"to the Philippines, and started to visit all of Southeast Asia, and its marvelous temples and cultural sites, also in China and the Indian Subcontinent.
Later on I visited all countries in Oceania,South America, Central America and the
Carribean. On the African continent I have been to 52 countries, and to many UNESCO world heritage sites that are very difficult to reach, and really off the beaten track.
In total I have now been to 192 UN countries plus 3 non-member countries (Kosovo, Taiwan and the Vatican) and 2 countries that ceased to exist(the German Democratic Republic) and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen) both former UN member states.
in 46 countries I have now visited all Unesco world heritage sites that currently exist, but in 34 I have not seen any!! As of March 2016 I have been to 638 sites out of 1008, or around 63%, in a total of 124 countries!

M'Zab Valley Thomas Buechler

On a Friday there are no official guides at the entrance gate of the old city of Ghardaia, nevertheless it is compulsory, and I have to ask the help of the military and police officials. But luckily some diplomats from Algiers showed up, and I was able to join them, not only for Ghardaia, but also the sister village of Beni Isguen; we walk up to the local mosque, always the highest point of a Mozabite town.

Djémila Thomas Buechler

Setif is a good headquarter from where to explore the Roman ruins of Djemila, the antique

Roman settlement of Cuicul. Select a trustworthy driver and start, half a day is enough for the 35km distance. For the very first time I had to register with the local police at the entrance gate, I found it a little exagerated, but locals always say that it's for security reasons. Djemila in spring time is unbelievable beautiful.

Al Qal'a of Beni Hammad Thomas Buechler

The advantage in Algeria is that almost all hotels and guesthouses have French TV channels, especially appreciated in remote towns like Ms'ila that I reached in a 3 hours ride with a Tintin like shared taxi from Batna, my backpack securely attached on the roof of the cab. The restaurant manager of Kal'aa Hotel offered his services to drive me to the Beni Hammad ruins, about 80km return, towards the Hodna mountains and passing some typical villages that for sure have not seen many tourists yet.

Tamgaly Thomas Buechler

Tamgaly is the most striking site of rock arts in Central Asia; it is located about 125 km northwest of Almaty, and can be reached only by private transportation. There is no public bus going there, or even going to the villages nearby. I organized it with Stantours, the driver/tourguide (ask for Marat) was very knowledgeable, and is doing this trip on a weekly basis during the tourist season in summer.

Goias Thomas Buechler

Cidade de Goias is yet another world heritage town in Brazil that became rich with gold. Up to the middle of the 20th century it was the capital city of Goias which was at that time the second biggest Brazilian state (after Amazonas), that was of course before Tocantins and Brasilia split away. It’s also known as Goias Velho, and lies magically in the Serra Dourrado hills. We chose to spend the night close to the river and the historical bridge, and were not dissappointed with the view from the balcony to the old city.
