Los Katios National Park

Los Katíos National Park is known for its high biodiversity and high regional endemism. It lies in northwest Colombia and is contiguous to Darién National Park in Panama. Because of its location on the Darien isthmus, it filtered the interchange of flora and fauna between North and South America.

The park comprises two main regions:
- the mountains of the Serranía del Darién
- the floodplain of the Atrato river, with lowland swamp forests

Notable fauna species found in Los Katios include the giant anteater, tapir, jaguar, spectacled caiman and American manatee. More than 450 species of birds have been recorded.

Jarek Pokrzywnicki (Poland):
Finally I managed to get there. Just spent one day as a guest of Park officials on their place in Sautata. Officialy, currently it is not possible to go there due to security problems (FARC, paramilitaries), the only available solution is to take Turbo - Riosucio boat on Atrato river (starting from Turbo at 8.00 a.m. so you should reach Riosucio after around 4 hours). There will be either boat back to Turbo the same day or most probably next day, if don't want to stay in Riosucio probably there will be a return 4x4 collectivo to Turbo via land (but that should be checked in Turbo). On a way to Riosucio part of Atrato river lies within park boundaries so you may have impression how aluvial part of Los Katios looks like.
