I stayed for 2 nights in the Feynan Ecolodge, the flagship accommodation of Jordan’s Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature in Dana Reserve. It is reached by 4WD only, so a local Bedouin driver will come and pick you up from the main road. That 20 minute approach alone is worthwhile for its view on the rock formations, especially in the late afternoon light.
From the lodge, I joined a half day hike to Wadi Ghwayr. Here you’ll see the landscape and plant life that Dana is known for. The riverbed of the Wadi Ghwayr only fills up in winter – until October just a small trickle is streaming through. Pink oleanders can be seen along the river, and trees are also quite abundant (a rare sight in Jordan). It is fun to just walk in a riverbed, and see the various geological formations rising up beside you. We did only encounter some small reptiles, like a tiny green frog and a couple of lizards. During the nights, large wildlife such as wolves and hyenas roam this area to prey on the Bedouin’s goats and sheep. Date posted: October 2012
