Andrew_Kerr Profile

I wouldn't say I let UNESCO listings dictate where I go but whenever I have decided to go somewhere I check to see what is nearby. UNESCO sites, tentative sites and former tentative sites are usually worth a visit.

The historic town of Korcula (T)

Andrew_Kerr UK - 24-Aug-24

The locals refer to this town as the "mini Dubrovnik" and despite it's very small size, it's easy to see why. With the town fortifications lapped by the clear waters of the Adriatic it does bear more than a passing similarity. That's where the comparisons end for me, Dubrovnik has become a victim of its own success. Overrun with tourists and Game of Thrones fans the city is too crowded and too expensive to be enjoyable anymore whereas Korcula, with its shaded alleyways, quiet squares and waterside restaurants is the antithesis of its big brother.

Gorge of Samaria National Park (T)

Gorge of Samaria National Park (T)

I did this walk in early May one year thinking the temperatures would be better than summer and it was definitely a wise choice. It's not a difficult walk as the paths are well defined and it's mostly downhill to the coast. There's an area that is quite rocky and that was the only section I would say was slightly challenging but fairly easy in the grand scheme of things. Make sure you take plenty of fluids and some energy food and don't forget your camera as the scenery is quite breathtaking, especially at the "Iron Gates" area. Grab a well deserved beer at the end before boarding the ferry for the short hop along the coast.

Venice and its Lagoon

Venice and its Lagoon

If you are bored with Venice you are surely bored with life. I've been there 5 times and I never find it boring. It's become very overcrowded in the summertime, something of a victim of it's own success but go in the winter when it's cold and foggy and practically deserted and you'll see a totally different city. It's so much easier to get around in winter too, there aren't so many vaporettos but the ones that run are less crowded.I can't say that there's any one thing that you really should see or one thing you should do, just being there is enough. It shouldn't exist, it's a crazy notion to build a city in the middle of a lagoon, especially 1,500 years ago and then to go on to dominate trade in the eastern Mediterranean but they did it

Euphrasian Basilica in Porec

Euphrasian Basilica in Porec

I have to be honest, it's not the most interesting or exciting WHS I've visited. I get the importance of the development of Christianity in Europe but there's not a massive amount of things to see. Possibly the best thing for me was 6th Century mosaic floor that partly remains. The basilica itself has undergone rebuilds for a variety of reasons and is not the original 6th Century building. Otherwise, all good.

Old Havana

Old Havana

Havana is a difficult place to categorise. It's a city of contrasts for sure, you can walk down a street that is falling apart and emerge on the wonderful Grand Theatre of Havana, a rich belle epoque building that wouldn't be out of place in Paris. It's a wonderful, beautiful and ultimately frustrating city that tantalises the visitor with scenes of what was or what might have been instead of what we have, a mixture of fine architecture and dilapidation crying out for restoration to it's former glory
