I visited Tiwai Island on a Lupine Travels tour in June 2023. The intent was to stay overnight at a community center dormitory in the middle of the island. Rugged road going in. Vehicle was parked and local guides loaded our luggage onto small boats. We drifted downriver about ten minutes before banking on the opposite shore. We followed a short trail to the center where we had dinner, were entertained by locals doing traditional dances and a role play involving a demon. The next morning a guide took us through island trails. The jungle was dense. Most impressive vegetation were the banyan trees. We didn’t see any animals other than a large impressive spider, but there were plenty of birds.

The site is very rundown and dilapidated. Nevertheless Niemeyer's buildings are always imaginative and interesting. The site is reminiscent of the Sputnik era when we looked to what our space age future would be like. It reminded me of the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair designed by his disciples that I visited when a child. Unfortunately his vision of wide open public spaces never seems to attract the masses as he intended. Even Brasillia felt empty and neglected. There were virtually no other visitors here, yet the grounds could have been a lovely park for families

I had a very expensive day trip here today from my hotel in Ikeja near the Lagos airport. Guide and driver. It took about 3 1/2 hours to arrive at the site. One is immediately taken by the unique art forms on the walls driving in. You know that you are in a special place. We were met by a local guide who showed us around. It was Sunday and there were few visitors, but there were perhaps a dozen ladies at the temple. It is said that drinking the sacred waters of the (polluted) river were healthful and they were enjoying the libation. It was a lovely grove and fascinating to see the strange sculptures. Many referred to gods and spirit animals

My review is only on the Red Tower of Death and mirrors Walter’s visit, although he got closer. I only got as close as the fence at the back of the industrial park for a view.
The site itself is closed however I do have some information if you want to visit. There is a standard brown tourist sign on the highway identifying the site. You turn after the industrial park. The site was closed for me and you cannot see the tower from the entrance due to the height of the fence. A sign on the door says the it will open after June 1 2023 but only on Saturday and Sunday for tours at 10am and 1pm. Tours are required but are free.
Personally, I wouldn’t go into that dusty uranium scented tower but I would have liked to have at least approached the building.
Plain of Jars

I visited in November 2022. Due to lack of time and a pesky cough I was only able to visit Site 1. Other reviewers have accurately described these curious sites. There is also a large cave at Site 1 where it is speculated the jars were baked, as the cave has chimney holes. It is also likely more recently locals hid in the cave during bombing runs. One curious fact I can add, as stated prior, the jars were likely made for food and alcohol storage and perhaps alcohol distillage. However bone fragments and ashes were carbon dated to as many as 500 to 1000 years later (approx 900 AD). So the jars were repurposed by another generation for burial long after their initial use. I stayed at Pukyo B&B near the airport. Very nice people and excellent food. They also provide tours
