DannyB Profile

A WHS book for my birthday in 2013 commenced my journey and exploration of WHS sites.  Work has interfered with much of my passion to date, however this is about to change in 2025 as we retire and embark on a 6-year overseas journey.

We are travelling with our 7-year-old Boston Terrier Dog, Yoki, which will bring about its own challenges, limitations and above all excitement.  It is for this reason we will not be visiting South America, Africa or much of Asia on this initial trip.  They will be for another day.  We will be doing a combination of fast and slow travel as we coordinate our WHS itinerary.

Finding this website, is like finding my tribe and I hope to contribute regularly with reviews for fellow enthusiasts.

I feel very blessed already in my life to having visited 165 WHS sites at the time of registering, so the remaining 1000+ will just be icing on the cake on this journey called life.

We have created a website, where we will be tracking our journey of our trials and tribulations of travelling with a dog and visiting WHS sites.  I am not sure who is more excited, my wife, Yoki or me.

We have just started to create our Social Media platform for social followers - Two Bacons and a Boston - YouTube.  We will also be running a website, Facebook and Instagram however this will be a mixture of dog travel and general travel not specific to WHS.

Vjetrenica Cave

DannyB Australia - 15-Oct-24

Vjetrenica Cave

We visited Vjetrenica Cave in early October 2024.  You can only visit the cave system with a guide from the site.  It opened at 10.00am and we undertook the first tour with just the two of us and the guide.  Cost is 10 Euro each and the tour take up to 45 min to an hour, with your ticket price including a visit to the museum to view artifacts that have been found in the cave and preserved in the museum for display.  The biodiversity of the cave system one of the main reasons for its inscription and it is not a visible part or your experience in the cave, however you do see an array of different cave system structures which are pleasant but not awe inspiring in itself

Mostar

DannyB Australia - 15-Oct-24

Mostar

Whilst Mostar appears to have been traditionally been a day trip to visit from either Dubrovnik or Split in many posts, we choose to stay overnight in a visit in October 2024.  We stayed in the old town and our bedroom window had a view of the Bridge which was wonderful.  The old town is very commercialised with mass UNESCO inscribed awnings hanging over each of the shops along the old cobblestone roads.  The commercialisation took a bit of shine of the site, but it was pleasant to wander the streets and appreciate the old town itself.  I would recommend an overnight at least as this was you can avoid some of the large crowds early in the morning and late in the afternoon

Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes

I was not going to do a review on this well-known World Heritage Site, however I noticed that the last review was undertaken in 2018, so thought an update would be good.  We visited in October 2024 in the shoulder season.  All our research indicated that the best option for us due to time and maximising the views of waterfalls, was walk C and to leave from Entrance 1.  But more importantly to get there before 9.00am to avoid the crowds.  The Park opens at 7.00.  We had a hire car and left Zagreb around 6.00am with a short coffee stop at Rastoke village along the way, a small village with waterfalls cascading through the village and parks.  A pleasant stop.

Purnululu National Park

DannyB Australia - 10-Jun-24

Purnululu National Park

Some Sites it is the Destination itself, however the Purnululu National Park is a combination of the journey and the destination.  There are a number of ways to get to Purnululu, although Kununurra in Western Australia is the easiest gateway.  We chose to drive there, however, many fly into Kununurra and hire a car to travel to the site or chose to fly to or over the site from Kununurra.  A high clearance 4wd vehicle is essential to visit the site, otherwise you will not be able to get there at all.  The first 220 kilometres is all bitumen paved road and will take you about 2 hours until you turn left onto the unpaved dirt road to Purnululu National Park.  The Visitor Centre is 56 kilometres in and this journey will take you about the same time of 2 hours

Lord Howe Island

DannyB Australia - 05-May-24

Lord Howe Island

We were lucky with a Lord Howe Island visit in 2021, at the height of the COVID restrictions across Australia as travel was limited and this location and UNESCO site can only receive 400 visitors at a time to ensure that it remains protected and not overwhelmed with visitation.  It is an isolated island in the Pacific Ocean off the east coast from the Australian mainland.  The natural beauty on the island did not allow me to take a bad picture.  On the island is a small township with the main transport being bicycles - get those legs warmed up.  There are a number of walking tracks across the Island for you to take in all the island has to offer.  Unfortunately, the main walking track to the peak was closed for maintenance during our visit
