Yen Tu Complex (T)

Yen Tu Complex (T)

On my flight from Rach Gia back to Ho Chi Minh City after Oc Eo sightseeing with ICOMOS experts, I found an interesting inflight magazine article about Yen Tu. After landing, I discussed with our accompanied local guide and immediately decided to extend my Vietnam trip to cover Yen Tu. Instead of flying back from Danang via Bangkok, my guide contacted her company to change the ticket to Hanoi and arranged a special program for me to explore Yen Tu. Since this was an impromptu trip, I rarely had information on this holy land of Truc Lam Vietnamese Zen Buddhism. At first, I requested to visit Vinh Nghiem pagoda on my way to Yen Tu, as Els did, but the tour company advised me to go to Con Son-Kiep Bac which I OK after reconfirmed that the name appeared in the description in UNESCO website.

Epidaurus

Epidaurus

Epidaurus is very famous, and I heard its name since I was a kid as almost every documentary about ancient Greek civilization had to mention its impressive amphitheater. For such well known site, I was not surprised to see hundreds of tourists when I arrived Epidaurus in one late summer day evening, it seemed to me that many came to visit in such time to avoid heatwave in the afternoon. Fortunately, that those were on their way back and when I secured my 12 EUR entrance ticket, the site was relatively peaceful.

Oc Eo - Ba The (T)

Two years after pre-Angkorian and Dvaravati arts tour with ICOMOS international experts in Cambodia and Thailand, I had received an invitation to join the second episode of this academic gathering but this time focusing on pre-Angkorian and Cham arts in Vietnam which I immediately decided to participate even though I already visited most of the Champa Sites but visiting Oc Eo of Funan was really tempting. The group of scholars and enthusiasts firstly met at Saigon and visited Ho Chi Minh City Museum of History to study many statues of Funan and Champa. Most of the statues are Vishnu and Buddha, interesting but the quality of Funan art displaying in Phnom Penh National Museum I saw two years ago are much better

The Site of Angkor Borei and Phnom Da (T)

The first part of my two weeks field trip in Cambodia and Thailand exploring pre-Angkorian and Dvaravati arts with ICOMOS international experts was focusing on Funan Culture, the first kingdom of Southeast Asia. We started our journey at Phnom Penh National Museum to admire beautiful and realistic Funan period Hindu god statues to understand how Southern Indian art and architecture existed in Mekong Delta area via ancient maritime trade route that connected India, Nicobar Island, Sumatra, Java with communities around Gulf of Thailand

Niah Caves

Niah Caves

With Niah’s UNESCO inscription means Malaysia have two paleontology sites making this country to be on the same league with South Africa and Ethiopia on center of humankind evolution study, something remarkable and mind-blowing facts you have never expected from this Southeast Asian country. Also with this inscription, Miri, the capital of Malaysian petroleum production, becomes the gateway of two World Heritage Sites, and surely will become the tourism center of Sarawak. After underwhelming experience at Lenggong Valley, I hoped that Niah will not be the same.
