Belize Barrier Reef

Mahuhe Germany - 21-Apr-23

Belize Barrier Reef

As previous reviewers have written: As a non-diver, it is difficult to visit and appreciate this WHS. If you are a snorkeller and want to visit the core zone, you can either stay in San Pedro or Caye Caulker and book a long and expensive tour that is more geared towards divers. Or you book a stay in an expensive resort on one of the more remote islands.

What to do? After some research I decided to stay on Tobacco Caye. Tobacco Caye is a small island (and small really means small, the island is the size of two soccer fields) that lies within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve and thus the WHS. The island is permanently inhabited and has several basic accommodations. Most importantly, Tobacco Caye is right on the barrier reef and you can snorkel from shore.

Colchic Rainforests and Wetlands

I visited Mtirala National Park, which is located in the mountainous hinterland of the Adjarian coast and is one of the wettest places in Georgia. It is characterized mainly by its rainforest with many endemic species.

I took a taxi from Batumi

Pyrénées - Mont Perdu

Unlike the previous reviewers, I visited the French part of the World Heritage Site, to be more precise the Cirque de Gavarnie. The Cirque is a deep, amphitheatre like valley formed by glaciers, with steep, very high cliffs (the mountains rise up to 1500 meters above the valley floor). It is also home to one of the highest waterfalls in Europe.

I visited the Cirque in July 2020 on a day trip. I stayed overnight in Lourdes and drove by car to the village of Gavarnie (takes about an hour). You are not allowed to enter the village center by car, but there is paid parking near it. I think, the earlier you arrive, the better

Chilika Lake (T)

Mahuhe Germany - 26-Sep-21

Chilika Lake (T)

I visited Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water lagoon in India, in 2016. I took a taxi from Puri (important pilgrimage site and popular beach resort) to Satapada. There, you can find a harbour with several tourist boats offering tours on the lake.

Chilika Lake is not a national park, so you should not expect unspoiled nature. The part of the lake I visited was extensively used for fishing. On my tour, I saw only a few birds, but midday in April is for sure not the best time of year for bird watching. However, there were some dolphins (Chilika Lake is home to a population of Irrawaddy dolphins). Unfortunately, it was an unpleasant experience as the tourist boats were chasing and surrounding the animals.

Sun Temple, Konarak

Sun Temple, Konarak

I have visited quite a lot of Hindu temples over the years. For me, the Sun Temple is unique because it takes the form of a huge chariot (the surviving structure is still 30 meters high). The architectural style is typical for Odisha but different from those in other parts of India. Highlights are the stone carvings depicting Hindu deities, animals, and scenes of daily life (including some erotic ones). There are also 24 beautiful stone wheels, each about three meters high.

Around the main temple there are ruins of minor temples and buildings. But all in all, the area of the site is small. My visit took about an hour. There is also a museum run by the Archaeological Survey of India just north of the temple. Unfortunately, it was closed when I was in Konarak in 2016.
