I love exploring everything around me - thus, it is not surprising I am a scientist. The important aspect of doing good science is to travel...

All in all, I am traveling quite a lot, mostly around Europe. Since I like bustling cities and quiet historical towns as well as nature, the list of my visited sites is diverse.

Via Appia

Matejicek Czechia - 17-Jun-23

Via Appia

Though I visited Rome several times, it was still not enough to visit all the interesting places in Rome, not to mention the places around. In May 2023, I traveled to Salento region in the Southern Italy, so I took opportunity and did a stop in Brindisi. This place was the end of extended Via Appia, and the reason why Brindisi was connected to Rome was a possibility to travel to Greece and the East by sailing from the local port.

Brindisi is now important port and tourist spot. One can find however several interesting monuments spanning two millennia in the relatively small and rather unassuming historical core. The only site related to Via Appia that could be seen is its "official" end marked by giant two columns (PHOTO)

Salento and the Barocco Leccese (T)

Salento and the Barocco Leccese (T)

I spent Pentecost Holidays (late May of 2023) in Lecce and it was my second visit of this place. Besides Lecce, I did a half-day trip to Nardo, and also did a stop in Ostuni during my return to Bari (I enjoyed direct flights between Prague and Bari!). Together with my 2018 visit of the Salento region (visiting of Lecce and Gallipoli), I could see almost all components mentioned on the worldheritagesite webpages. However, I did a small research and no explicit list of components are provided on official UNESCO pages and anywhere at all, maybe with an exception of Basilica di Santa Croce and Cattedrale di Lecce including Piazza del Duomo, which are absolute highlights of this TWHS

Saint-Honorat (T)

Saint-Honorat (T)

I visited the Island of Saint-Honorat during my vacations in Cannes in September 2001. We did a day trip to the Lérins Islands by ferry from the port of Cannes in a same way as a lot of other tourists.  I do not remember all the details but the tour included both islands. It means bigger Sainte-Marguerite with the fortress, where a small museum was located, and nice small beaches all around the island, where we spent most of our time. We also did a short stop at the Saint Honorat Island, where the monastery is located.

Moravian Church Settlements

Matejicek Czechia - 01-Feb-22

Moravian Church Settlements

I visited the German component of the transnational extension of Christiansfeld, Denmark, during a gloomy weekend in Fall 2004. We did a trip to Upper Lusatia (Lausitz in German), the region in Germany inhabited by Sorbian Slavic minority (Upper and Lower Lusatia were parts of the Bohemian Crown in Middle Ages). One of our first stops was Herrnhut (Ochranov in Czech, Ochranow in Sorbian language). The titles in all the languages are related to "protection". While the Slavonic ones are rather literal, the German one is more poetic and it recalls a hat of the Lord, for shielding of Brethern against their enemies, probably Catholics.

Meteora

Meteora

I have very nice memories to the trip to northern Greece in June 2006. I managed to visit two promising TWHS (Zagorochoria and Mount Olympus) and two excellent WHS: paleochristian monuments in Thessaloniki and the rock city with monasteries in Meteora.

To visit the Meteora site, we traveled by bus from Ioannina via Metsovo to Kalambaka/Kastraki. Then, we did a loop by walking along the asphalt road that goes through the rock city. We did stopovers to visit the Roussanou monastery (PHOTO), where we joint the guided tour, and also the Holy Trinity monastery, which we visited for free but without stepping inside. We spent a night in a tent on dry meadow full of ants in the eastern part of the rock city complex (I am not sure if it is legal now but such were the times...) Unsurprisingly, this WHS was very touristy and overcrowded by visitors. The advantage of our walking and staying at the site regime was that we were a bit incoherent with the constant flow of tourist groups in buses and cars
