Philipp Peterer Profile

Philipp Peterer
Philipp Peterer.

I started focusing my trips on WHS in 2008. Since I leave in Europe, I could greatly increase my count in the following years. Nowadays my yearly goal is to visit more sites than are added the same year.

My trips are usually rather spontaneous and I try to maximize the time I have available by adding as many WHS and TWHS as possible, preferably completing countries or regions in one visit. For efficiency, my preferred method of transport is the combination of airplane and rental car. I’ve been driving a car in more than 50 countries, including Lebanon or India.

A major obsession of mine is to visit WHS with good weather conditions. I move or cancel trips if the forecast is bad. I also have a “revisit needed” list and travel back to WHS, where I had, sometimes due to bad weather, an unsatisfying visit.

In the upcoming years, I will shift my focus to more exotic and harder to reach sites. I also plan to keep up travelling with those community members that became good friends. No better way to celebrate a milestone or finding a hidden TWHS after navigating your car through rice fields than with fellow enthusiasts.

The Oil Industrial Heritage in Saudi Arabia (T)

Philipp Peterer Switzerland - 15-Oct-24

From the 5 locations proposed as Oil Heritage, only the Trans Arab Tapline is accessible.

Well 7, KFUPM and Dhahran Camp are all within the Saudi Aramco Campus in Damman and the guards would not let us in. Only if you work there or get an invitation by someone who works and lives on the campus you get access.

The Jeddah Refinery is part of the Luberef Oil Refinery campus. Access for employees only.

The only “visible” component is the Tapline. It runs mostly underground along the Tapline Road from Damman to Jordan, but becomes partially visible from around 20km along the Tapline Road after the junction to the airport. Unfortunately, when planning a visit I did not focus on the pipeline (I really counted on the Well no7) and only saw that on the map back home.

Mozu-Furuichi Kofun

Philipp Peterer Switzerland - 30-Aug-24

Mozu-Furuichi Kofun

You can tick this site very easy, or you can go tryhard. The easy version would be to take the train from Osaka to Mikunigoaga station, cross the road and take a picture of Genemonyama Kofun. Done.

Me, on the other hand, I went tryhard. In honour of the legendary Iain Jackson, I panned to visit over 50% of the components, even though after seeing a few, there is little reward in seeing more.

Furiuchi clusterI left my family in Osaka and first went to the Furiuchi cluster. From Osaka I took the train to Hajinosato station, started with the one north to the station and then walked all the way down the cluster, ending at Furiuchi station. I covered 19 components along the way. Way more than necessary, but at a certain point my competitive streak kicked in. There is really not much to see. The bigger ones have some kind of medieval water trench around the mound. Those bigger mounds are completely covered in forest. They are all not accessible, but I doubt there would be something to see besides trees. The smaller ones are naked mounds or with a few trees on it. Nabezuka Kofun just next to Hajinosato station can be climbed. The rest is fenced off

Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine

Philipp Peterer Switzerland - 13-Aug-24

Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine

As all reviews so far have only covered Omori, which is for sure the most interesting part of this WHS, I will focus on the other components. I visited 13 of the 14 components and it involved quite some hiking. Iwami-JoI left my car where google maps leads you off the main road. Around a hundred meters up the side road there is an unmarked path that leads right into the forest. Follow the plastic markers you sometimes find bound to the trees up the hill. It seemed not many people follow the path, so you get the real Indiana Jones feeling

Sado Island Gold Mines

Philipp Peterer Switzerland - 13-Aug-24

Sado Island Gold Mines

I hadn’t planned in the Sado Mines for my trip to Japan. But then the site was inscribed during while I was in Osaka region and I could not resist to reorganize my Tokyo part to squeeze it in.I added Sado as part of my Tokyo loop by rental car, driving straight from Tokyo to Niigata. The next morning I took the hydrofoil to Sado. It makes no sense to bring the car to the island as the ferry is slower (2.5h compared to the 1h by hydrofoil) and it’s more expensive to bring your car instead of renting one on the island for a few hours.Car rental was very easy and uncomplicated. There are more companies in and around the port than I ever saw at any airport in Japan

Umm Al-Jimāl

Philipp Peterer Switzerland - 17-Jul-24

Umm Al-Jimāl

I visited Umm al-Jimal by rental car from Amman on a trip in May 2019, that covered the northern WHS of Jordan. Access was easy, even though it is close to the Syrian boarder and neighboured by a Military Air Base and a huge refugee camp.Even though not as spectacular as nearby Jerash, the place has its charm. There is so much left from the Byzantine/Umayyad city, that it rather looks like a town recently destroyed by an earthquake than an archaeological site from the 6th century. On the other side I had a hard time finding something from the Nabatean and Roman periods. The real beauty of the city lies in the building material. The region was formed by volcanic activity and everything was built with local black basalt stones
