Val d'Orcia According to tradition, Sant'Antimo Abbey was founded in 871 by Charlemagne. (Nomination file, p. 86) On 29 December 814, a document by Louis the Pious, son and successor of Charles, enriched the abbey with gifts and privileges. The abbey became, in all respects, an imperial abbey.
