Derwent Valley Mills As a distant relative her father inherited the wealth of the Derwent valley industrialist Peter Nightingale on his death in 1815 and took the surname "Nightingale". Peter Nightingale was a major figure in the industrialisation of the Derwent valley and has 36 references in the Derwent Valley Nomination File as the creator of mill, factories, canals etc. This inherited wealth gave the family the stability and status which allowed Florence to receive the education and social access which were the foundations of her subsequent career
Florence Was born at the Villa Colombaia in the WHS buffer zone 1km south of Porta Roman. Was named after the city and has a Carrara Marble monument in the cloisters of Basilica of Santa Croce.
Nubian Monuments In 1849/50 she visited Egypt and sailed up the Nile as far as Abu Simbel. Her very detailed letters home have been published as "Florence Nightingale - Letters from Egypt" and are readable on Internet archive
Westminster Burial in Westminster abbey was offered on her death in 1910 but the provisions of her will indicated that she wished to be buried in her family grave at Wellow in Hampshire near to the family home at Embley Park. A "Florence Nightingale commemoration service" is held every May in the Abbey.
