Recently Active Volcanoes

A volcano which has erupted Lava, pyroclastic material or gases as a significant event in the Twentieth Century. With date of last eruption. Fumaroles, mud pots, hot springs and other continuing "minor" geothermal "extrusions" are excluded.

"Decade Volcanoes" are 16 which have been identified by the International association of Volcanology and chemistery of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to populated areas.

Galapagos Islands One of the world?s most active volcanic areas, with more than 50 eruptions in the past 200 years. Six of the volcanoes are still active (1 on Fernandina and 5 on Isabela). The most recent explosion was Cerro Azul on Isabela in September of 1998.
Guanacaste Rincón de la Vieja - last erupted in June 2017 (including lahars that descended through some rivers on the northern side of the volcano).
Hawaii Volcanoes Kilaua has been eruptng lava continuously at Pu'u 'O'o since January 1983. It is currently the most active volcano on the Earth. Mauna Loa's most recent eruption occurred from March 24, 1984, to April 15, 1984. Mauna Loa is a "Decade Volcano"
Heard and McDonald Islands The main volcano on Heard Island is called Big Ben (with Mawson Peak as the summit). Others are Mt Dixon and Laurens Peninsular. Eruptions were recorded in 2008, 2007, 2006, 2003-04, 2000-01, 1993, 1992, 1985-87, 1954, 1953, 1950-52, 1910. McDonald island erupted 1996-2001, 2004, 2005 and doubled in size between 1980 and 2001
Isole Eolie 2 Active volcanoes. Stromboli - Has the worlds longest recorded period of activity from 350BC to present. Recent occurrences in 1986 (tourist killed), 1989, 2001/2/3/7/8 . In 2008 there were 4 vents erupting 20 times per hour. Vulcano - although considered "active" hasn't erupted significantly since 1888/90

Northern Martinique "The 1902-1905 eruption of mount Pelée is considered the deadliest volcanic event in the 20th century" (AB ev)
Pitons of Reunion Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active in the world, recently in January 2010
Sangay National Park Tungurahua "During the past 1300 years eruptive episodes were generally once per century, and commenced with .... pyroclastic flows, followed by lava flows.. . This cycle was observed in the largest historic eruptions in 1773, 1886 and 1916-1918". There were also recent eruptions in 1999-2008 and 1944". Eruptions in January 2008 forced the evacuation of 1000 people. Two large eruptions occurred on 6th February 2008 with ash to 47,000 ft altitude. Sangay is one of the world's most active volcanoes with a current active cycle from 1934 to present. On 12th August 1976 and eruption killed two people and seriously injured three, from a British expedition team.
Surtsey The 1963 eruption began 130 m below sea level and reached the surface in November. Eruptions continued until June 1967 when it had formed an island with an area of 2.7 sq km. Erosion had reduced the island size to 1.4 sq km in 2007
Teide National Park 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the Santiago (northwestern) rift. "Volcanic unrest occurred at the volcano in January 2005. Carbon dioxide emissions rose from 75 to 354 tons per day, and hydrogen sulfide emissions rose from 35 to 152 tons per day". A "Decade Volcano"
Tongariro National Park Ngauruhoe is the main active vent in the park with eruptions rarely more than 9 years apart. It has been quiet since 1975 -the longest such period in recorded history
Tropical Rainforest Sumatra Mount Kerinci in Kerinci Seblat National Park. Last eruption in June 2, 2013 (eruption with 600 m (1,969 ft) spewed black smoke)
Ujung Kulon National Park Krakatoa. The "Infamous" eruption took place in 1883 and the currently active centere is Anak Krakatau which emerged from the sea in 1930. Recent eruptrions there have taken place in 2007-09, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1997, 1996, 1994-95, 1992-93, 1988, 1981, 1980, 1979, 1978, 1975, 1972-73. In May 2009 the level of alert was raised from 2 to 3 (out of 4)
Vatnajökull National Park Grímsvötn, large eruption in 2011
Virunga National Park Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are together responsible for 40% of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions. There were major events in 1977 and 2002. Mt Nyirangongo is a "Decade Volcano"
Volcanoes of Kamchatka According to the original AB 1996 evaluation "Kamchatka has 29 Active volcanoes of which 19 are within the nominated area". The 2001 extension is said to have added another cluster of 12 (No it doesn't add up!). Avachinsky is one of the most active - It has erupted at least 17 times in the recorded history of Kamchatka. There was a major eruption in 1945. The last one was 2001. Together with nearby Koryaksky it is a "Decade Volcano"
