Jodrell Bank Observatory | The observatory's Lovell Telescope successfully tracked the USSR's Sputnik 1, the first artifical Earth satellite, in 1957. At the time, it was the only telescope in the world capable of tracking satellites by radar. Jodrell Bank later tracked US and Soviet spacecraft throughout the Cold War.
Kremlin and Red Square | The Kremlin Wall Necropolis contains the interred remains of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, and the crew of the Soyuz 11, the only manned mission to board the world's first space station, Salyut-1.
Papahanaumokuakea | The last US solo-manned mission to space, Mercury-Atlas 9, splashed down in the Pacific in 1963, approximately 70 nautical miles from Midway Atoll in what is now the Papahânaumokuâkea Marine National Monument. Both Mercury-Atlas 9 and the previous mission, Mercury-Atlas 8, were supported by the US military at Midway Atoll.
Phoenix Islands | Kanton Island within the Phoenix Islands Protected Area was home to a groundstation used by the US to track manned space missions during the Project Mercury and Project Gemini programs in the early 1960s.
Saryarka | Lake Tengiz in Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve "On 16 October 1976, the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 23 unintentionally splashed down into the northern part of the lake, which was frozen, crashing through the ice. The crew was saved thanks to a very difficult but successful rescue operation" (Wiki) |
Suggestions?
Do you know of another WHS we could connect to Space Exploration?
A connection should:
- Not be "self evident"
- Link at least 3 different sites
- Not duplicate or merely subdivide the "Category" assignment already identified on this site.
- Add some knowledge or insight (whether significant or trivial!) about WHS for the users of this site
- Be explained, with reference to a source
