Time Balls and Guns
WHS from which regular time signals are "sent" (or where the equipment to do so still exists). The 2 forms of signal are a ball dropped from a visible point and/or a gun fired at a specific time.
Connected Sites
Site | Rationale | Link |
Edinburgh | 1pm a Time gun from the Castle and ball from Calton Hill
Maritime Greenwich | At 1pm since 1833 a Time Ball is dropped from above Flamsteed house
Nice | "Since 1860 a cannon (based at the Château east of Old Nice) is shot at twelve o'clock sharp. The detonation can be heard almost all over the city. This tradition goes back to Sir Thomas Coventry, who intended to remind the citizens of having lunch on time." Nowadays, the "cannon shot" is in reality a pyrotechnic burst of air, signalling midday to the surrounding area.
St. Petersburg | At noon from the St Peter and Paul Fortress
Valletta | Saluting Battery Barracca garden. Now only on Saturdays at noon. |
Suggestions?
Do you know of another WHS we could connect to Time Balls and Guns?
A connection should:
- Not be "self evident"
- Link at least 3 different sites
- Not duplicate or merely subdivide the "Category" assignment already identified on this site.
- Add some knowledge or insight (whether significant or trivial!) about WHS for the users of this site
- Be explained, with reference to a source
