Site | Rationale | Link |
Al-Faw | "Currently, the nominated property is not open to visitation." (AB Ev, March 2024)
Chiribiquete National Park | At present, there is no tourism allowed inside the property and it is important to strictly control any tourism access. (AB ev)
Decorated cave of Pont d'Arc | There is a replica, but the original cave has never opened to the general public
Gough and Inaccessible Islands | Visitors are not allowed to land on Gough island. Tourists are limited to Zodiac cruises which must not approach the shore and even crew members from passing yachts may not go ashore except in the case of an "extreme emergency". (Landing is allowed on Inaccessible if authorised by the Tristan Da Cunha government and accompanied by local guides who have to travel with the ship from the main island of Tristan)
Los Katios National Park | While at the time of writing, Los Katíos is still closed to the public (UAESPNN, 2020) according to State Party (2019), a plan is under development to restore visitor facilities and promote nature-based tourism on relatively short term ("Ecotourism Corridor of Ciénagas” sponsored by the BIOCARIBE Connection Project – GEF and implemented by FAO). (IUCN Outlook 2020)
Papahanaumokuakea | Only open for specific purposes. 'Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge is the only area of the monument where recreational activities are permitted. Access was previously controlled by issuing special ocean use permits. However, the Midway Atoll Visitor Program closed in 2012, and no visitor access is currently available. USFWS will evaluate when and if this activity will be able to resume based on a number of logistical and financial factors.' (IUCN Consultation, 2020)
Stoclet House | Privately owned, and only very few people have seen its interior.
Sundarbans National Park | "The World Heritage site is managed as a designated wilderness zone in which no commercial operations or resource extraction is allowed. The remainder of the Tiger Reserve act as a buffer zone, comprising nine forest blocks in which sustainable extractive activities are allowed via permits" (IUCN outlook 2020), see also Forum research in link
Surtsey | Only open to scientists since its existence.
Thracian tomb of Kazanlak | Interior of the real tomb is closed. There is a replica.
Vézère Valley | Lascaux Cave has been closed since 1963; there is a replica available and also there are other inscribed caves that can be visited. |
Suggestions?
Do you know of another WHS we could connect to Not open to tourists?
A connection should:
- Not be "self evident"
- Link at least 3 different sites
- Not duplicate or merely subdivide the "Category" assignment already identified on this site.
- Add some knowledge or insight (whether significant or trivial!) about WHS for the users of this site
- Be explained, with reference to a source
