"In 1856, while staying in the [Former Hotel Adam Hailmann in Bad Kissingen], Gioacchino Rossini began to compose again after a 27-year break. Documents (...) exemplify the intense preoccupation with his late work, the "Péchés de vieillesse" (Sins of Old Age) and the "Petite messe solennelle" (little solemn mass). Rossini was impressed by the music played in a spa; it was the first time he heard music by Richard Wagner in concert." (Nomination file, p. 245)
