The Descent from the Cross (Rogier van der Weyden) and its prominent copies: The Descent from the Cross is a painting by the Flemish artist Rogier van der Weyden c.1435, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid. It is regarded by many art historians as the most influential Netherlandish painting of the crucifixion of Christ, and has produced several prominent copies. The painting was originally commissioned for Greater Guild of Crossbowmen of Leuven and installed in the Chapel of Our Lady Without the Walls (destroyed in 1798).
