Belize ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 6 November 1990, and its sole World Heritage site is a natural property. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System encompasses the extensive barrier reef, offshore atolls, mangrove cayes, and seagrass habitat—valued for marine biodiversity, geological reef development, and conservation of critical wildlife like sea turtles, manatees, crocodiles, and seabirds.
