Ethiopia ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 6 July 1977. Its inscribed sites are predominantly cultural, with two natural properties.
Its cultural entries span ancient religious architecture, archaeological landscapes, and historic urban centers—common themes include rock-hewn churches (e.g., Lalibela), stelae fields, royal palaces, and archaeological fossil sites (e.g., Lower Omo and Awash valleys). The two natural sites—Simien and Bale Mountains National Parks—represent Ethiopia’s unique highland ecology and geological significance
