Georgia

Georgia ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention in November 1992, as a successor state to the Soviet Union which did so in 1988.

It has since inscribed several sites, with a predominant focus on cultural heritage alongside its sole natural site. Common themes among its nominations include medieval religious architecture, ancient urban settlements, monastic traditions, and human adaptation to mountainous environments. From early Christian cathedrals and cave monasteries to historic fortified villages and lush rainforests, Georgia’s inscribed sites collectively highlight the country’s deep historical roots.
