Guatemala ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 16 January 1979.

Its inscribed sites feature a mix of cultural and mixed heritage, showcasing ancient Maya archaeological complexes, colonial urban architecture, and tropical forest landscapes. Recurring themes include monumental Maya cities with ceremonial plazas and temples (Tikal), colonial-era towns with Spanish Baroque influence (Antigua Guatemala), and carved stelae fields (Quiriguá), alongside biodiverse rainforest ecosystems integrated with archaeological remains
