Iceland ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 19 December 1995, and its inscribed sites are a balanced mix of cultural and natural heritage.
Common themes include early parliamentary history and the Viking Age (exemplified by Þingvellir National Park), alongside unique geological and ecological phenomena such as a newly formed volcanic island and expansive glacier landscapes (Surtsey, Vatnajökull National Park).
