Iran

Iran accepted the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 26 February 1975. Its inscribed sites are overwhelmingly cultural, with a smaller portion reflecting natural heritage.

Common themes include ancient Persian imperial capitals and archaeological ruins (e.g., Persepolis, Pasargadae, Tchogha Zanbil), Islamic-era architectural ensembles (such as Isfahan’s Friday Mosque and Tabriz Bazaar), historic water-management and hydraulic systems (notably Shushtar), and Silk Road trade infrastructures (like caravanserais and the Trans-Iranian Railway).
