Israel

3.08 10 18

Israel accepted the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 6 October 1999. Its current UNESCO inscriptions are exclusively cultural.

Common themes among its nominations include ancient biblical and Roman-era archaeological sites, Crusader fortresses and medieval coastal cities, early modern “White City” Bauhaus architecture, and prehistoric human-evolution caves. These designations underscore Israel’s layered history, from biblical antiquity to 20th-century urban design and pivotal prehistoric landscapes.

Note: The Old City of Jerusalem is a site proposed by Jordan. It is included on the page of Israel only for travel logistical reasons. Jordan/Palestine and Israel report separately on the conservation status to the WHC.
