New Zealand

New Zealand ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 22 November 1984. Its three inscribed sites include both natural and mixed cultural–natural properties.

Cultural themes are deeply intertwined with Māori traditions, evident in Tongariro National Park’s volcanic peaks as sacred landscapes, alongside dramatic geological phenomena. Natural listings—such as Te Wāhipounamu and the Sub‑Antarctic Islands—highlight ancient biodiversity, glacial landforms, endemic flora and fauna, and marine ecosystems.
