Suriname accepted the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on October 23, 1997.

It has both cultural and natural sites inscribed, including the Central Suriname Nature Reserve and the historic inner city of Paramaribo. Common themes among its nominations include tropical rainforest ecosystems, historic architecture from the Dutch colonial period, and the cultural landscapes shaped by Maroon communities.
