Uzbekistan ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on 13 January 1993, as a successor state to the Soviet Union, which did so in 1988. The country’s inscribed sites include both cultural and natural properties.
Cultural nominations commonly feature Silk Road cities—like Itchan Kala (Khiva), Bukhara, Shakhrisyabz, and Samarkand—with their medieval Muslim architecture, caravanserais, mosques, and madrasas. Natural listings include transnational sites such as the Western Tien Shan, emphasizing mountain biodiversity and geological diversity.
