Antigua Guatemala
Antigua Guatemala is a Spanish-colonial urban landscape filled with baroque architecture.
Antigua was the capital of the Spanish colonial government in Central America. The catholic church played an important role in daily life, which resulted in numerous churches, monasteries and examples of religious imagery. The 16th-century basic grid town plan has been preserved. The baroque building style was adapted to better withstand earthquakes.
Community Perspective: Unequalled among the colonial towns in Central America, beautifully preserved, and in its tourist approach geared towards a boutique-y international lifestyle. Els gives an overview of the main sights.

Baroque
Antigua is where the “Barroco Sísmico” or seismic baroque was developed thanks to Diego de Porres, a Guatemalan architect after the earthquakes of 1717. He also designed various baroque churches in Guatemala and in Central America such as Basílica de Esquipulas, Guatemala and Catedral de León, Nicaragua.

Mercedarians
La Merced Church "The Mercedarians were the first to establish a male monastery at the former Santiago de Guatemala ..... On top looms the effigy of San Pedro Nolasco who founded the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy in the thirteenth century. He is flanked by two Mercedaries and the crest of the order. The effigy of Our Lady of Mercedes is situated in the central niche of the facade. She is flanked to the left by the effigies of San Raymundo Nonnatus and San Pedro Arinengol (with a rope indicating his martyrdom because of being hanged) and to the right side by the Mercedary bishop San Pedro Pascual as well as the first Mercedary nun, Santa Maria de Cervelló." Built in the 16th century
Founded in its current location in 1543 and was "capital" of the colony of Guatemala (most of C America and S Mexico)until 1776 when it was largely destroyed by an earthquake (earlier ones had also regularly caused damage), the capital was moved and the old city took its current name of "Antigua". A number of the major buildings were constructed during those 200 years but much of the extant fabric post-dates the earthquake. Sao Francisco Church and the ruined Sto Domingo Monastery contain probably the only 16th century remains. The towers of the Cathedral date to 1680. The monastery of the Capucins and La Merced church are also pre-earthquake 18th century
