The Fortress of Al-Ukhaidar
The Fortress of Al-Ukhaidar is part of the Tentative list of Iraq in order to qualify for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
The Fortress of Al-Ukhaidar is an Abassid palace-fortress erected in 775 AD with a unique defensive style. The large, rectangular structure consists of two fortified enclosures. The outer one has towers and a wall with loopholes. The inner one comprises a primary hall, a large Iwan, a reception hall and servants quarters. The fortress stood in the desert on an important trade route.
