The Prehistoric sites of the Azykh and Taghlar caves have produced anthropological and archaeological remains related to early hominins up to 1,200,000 years ago. The caves were subsequentially home to early species of Homo erectus (referred to as “Guruchai culture”), Homo heidelbergensis, and Neanderthals. The Azykh cave has evidence of one of the oldest examples of construction and use of fireplaces by hominins.
