Jabal Haraz

Jabal Haraz is a mountainous cultural landscape in western Yemen that served as a stopover for caravans during the days of the Himyarite Kingdom, and later as the main stronghold for the Sulayhid dynasty, established in Yemen in the 11th century. Haraz is known for its beautiful landscapes, as well as its series of fortified villages and terraced fields built onto the sides of mountains and connected by paved roads. Among these villages are Manakha, a 12th century market town, and Al-Hajjara, whose citadel and houses provide some of the finest examples of Yemeni mountain architecture.
