Instructions for Geo Editors

When assigned the Geo Editor role in the WHS Content Management System, you can work independently on Locations and Core Zones. Please find some instructions below on how to use the system with care.

Locations

Locations are all official and community-identified single-point coordinates, including Points of Interest, along with their metadata. The locations can be accessed via the menu option WHS GIS, sub-option WHS Locations.

Here you can:

  1. Edit existing locations: Find the location you want to alter using the search option or the filter to the right. You can then change the display name and coordinates, or add an image (1 image per location).
  2. Add a new location: Choose Add WHS location at the top of the page. You only need to enter the fields marked with an *. Do not change the zoom field. Also, "Is Primary" is only relevant for official and community-identified locations (not for POIs): each (T)WHS can have only 1 primary location. (it is also possible to add new locations via a GeoJSON file, see this)

Guidelines:

  • A community-identified location only exists if there is no official location given at the UNESCO website or if the one given is plainly wrong (other side of town, middle of nowhere). Moving an official coordinate just slightly for convenience (to across the street, other side of the building, 100m down the road) does not make it community-identified.
  • If you see a major change, such as adding or removing multiple official or community-identified locations, verify the validity of this first by proposing it at the Forum (so a 2nd opinion can be had).
  • The number of POIs per site is unlimited, but try not to be too exhaustive: think of what you would recommend a friend with WHS interest. We're not the Local Bureau of Tourism.

Core Zones

GeoJSON files displaying the core zones can be uploaded via the option Upload GeoJSON in the main menu. The general rule is 1 file and 1 core zone per WHS.

The function speaks for itself, but there are a few things that can go wrong:

  • The file is too large - it only alerts you at the end, but keep in mind that the max size now is about 55 kb. You can resize a file via mapshaper (mapshaper may return you the file using GeometryCollection, you need to set this back to FeatureCollection)
  • The uploaded data does not show in the preview (the preview keeps showing Hamburg): there is a syntax error in your file. You could check the validity in geojson.io, QGIS or via ChatGPT. A common issue is that GeoJSON files converted from KML show a third dimension (like [13.76390248239383,50.73871550493726,0]) - here all ,0 has to be removed before uploading.
  • The screen after uploading shows 2 or more core zones: this means that your content (covering 2 or more locations of 1 WHS) is not in a MultiPolygon but in separate Polygons. You have to merge them first; this can be done via QGIS.

If you upload a file that was made by a third-party source, add (c) source name to the core zone title (so, "Kaziranga (c) Protected Planet"). The list of sources that allow us free use can be found here - for additional ones, discuss first in the Whatsapp group to verify the copyright rules.

If you have made a mistake or want to upload a new version of a GeoJSON, you can remove the old one via the menu option WHS GIS, sub-option WHS Zones. You cannot edit it; you have to replace it fully.
