Archaeo-Genetics

Definition

WHS for which an Archaeo-genetic study has provided significant reassessment of its history. The study must be supported by a published report in a World-respected journal (e.g "Nature", "Science"). The study must relate to DNA samples obtained within the core zone of the site and not just to a regional investigation whose conclusions have then been retro-applied to a WHS at another, albeit nearby, location. The genetic evidence must do more than just confirm known history; it must alter, upend or correct a former archaeological or historical assessment of the site.

The term "Archaeogenetics" was only coined in 2001 and is defined as "the study of ancient DNA using various molecular genetic methods and DNA resources. This form of genetic analysis can be applied to human, animal, and plant specimens. Ancient DNA can be extracted from various fossilized specimens including bones, eggshells, and artificially preserved tissues in human and animal specimens.,,, (It) provides us with genetic evidence of ancient population group migrations, domestication events, and plant and animal evolution." (Wiki).

Provide a summary of the revised historic narrative and the journal reference which provides an abstract if not access to the full article.
