Malawi ratified the UNESCO World Heritage Convention on January 5, 1982. It currently has both natural and cultural sites inscribed: Lake Malawi National Park with its exceptional aquatic biodiversity, and the Chongoni Rock Art Area, highlighting indigenous rock paintings.
Its Tentative List further embraces rainforest and wetland reserves, sacred shrines, colonial-era slave routes, and historic missionary trails.
