Guyana
Shell Beach
Shell Beach is a 90-mile-long stretch of beach sections, which is the nesting ground for four out of the eight species of sea turtles (green turtle, leatherback, olive ridley and hawksbill).
Turtles used to be slaughtered for their meat and eggs, but the area is now strictly preserved with the support of local (Amerindian) communities. The beach along the Atlantic coastline consists of seashells, hence the name.
Community Perspective: In 2017, the beach was temporarily closed to tourism following serious flooding and coastal erosion. It is now again possible to enter with a permit, but it requires a long and costly boat ride in a remote and sensitive region. In December 2025, Roman flew over it on his way to the northernmost province of Guyana. See the gallery for his pictures.
